Power Control & Control Boards

Stop breakers tripping and motors burning out: safe DB boards, control panels, motor starters and power factor correction.

A breaker that keeps tripping, a burning smell from the board, a pump motor that burns out for the second time this year, or a KPLC bill with charges you do not understand. Behind most of these problems is a distribution board or control panel that is old, overloaded or wired by an unqualified fundi.

Poor boards are more than an inconvenience. Undersized breakers, loose terminations and missing earth leakage protection cause fires, shocks and expensive equipment damage. In factories and commercial buildings, a badly built motor control panel means downtime every time something trips.

Nerpax Systems designs, builds and installs control panels and distribution boards that are safe, correctly rated and easy to maintain. We survey your site and measure your loads, then supply genuine breakers, contactors and enclosures. We build or upgrade the board, install motor starters or power factor correction where needed, and commission everything with insulation and function tests. At handover, every circuit is labelled and you get a clear record of what was done. Our work follows the Kenyan wiring regulations and safety standards.

Whether it is a home DB board upgrade or an industrial motor control centre, one accountable team sees the job through. Book a site visit and we will assess your board and give you a clear quote.

Why choose us

Correctly rated, not guessed

We size breakers, cables and busbars from your measured load, so your board protects your wiring instead of tripping for no reason or failing to trip at all.

Built for safety

Earth leakage protection, surge protection, proper earthing and tight terminations come as standard, following the Kenyan wiring regulations.

Neat, labelled and documented

Every circuit is labelled and wiring is dressed neatly, so future maintenance and fault finding are quick and safe.

Genuine components

We use genuine breakers, contactors, relays and enclosures, because counterfeit switchgear is a common cause of board failures and fires.

Homes to industry

The same team handles a single-phase home DB upgrade and a three-phase motor control panel for a factory or water project.

Distribution boards and control panels: what we build

Every building has a board that splits incoming power into protected circuits. Commercial and industrial sites also have panels that control motors and machines. Choosing the right one starts with understanding your load and how it is used.

Distribution boards (DB boards)

A DB board holds the main switch, earth leakage protection and the circuit breakers for lights, sockets, cookers and other circuits. Older homes often still have rewireable fuses or a board with no earth leakage protection at all. A DB board upgrade replaces it with modern miniature circuit breakers (MCBs), an RCD or RCBOs and surge protection, and adds spare ways for future circuits. If your home has grown over the years with extensions, a new kitchen or a borehole pump, the original board may simply be too small for today's load. For apartments and commercial buildings we install main switchboards feeding sub-boards for each floor, unit or department.

Motor control panels and starters

Pumps, compressors, conveyors and fans need the right starter to protect both the motor and the supply:

  • DOL (direct on line) starters for small motors.
  • Star-delta starters to reduce starting current on larger motors.
  • Soft starters for smooth starts that cut mechanical stress.
  • VFD panels where speed control saves energy, such as booster pumps and ventilation fans.

Each panel includes overload protection, phase failure protection where needed, and clear controls and indicators.

Power factor correction

Motors and other inductive loads draw reactive power, which lowers your power factor. On many commercial and industrial KPLC tariffs, a low power factor attracts extra charges and wastes capacity in your cables and transformer. A correctly sized capacitor bank with an automatic controller brings the power factor back up. We measure your load before recommending a size, so you do not pay for capacitors you do not need.

What affects the cost of a board or panel

  • Single-phase or three-phase supply and the size of the incoming load
  • Number of circuits, motors or outgoing ways
  • Type of starters and whether VFDs are needed
  • Enclosure size, rating and whether it is indoor or outdoor
  • Condition of existing cabling and earthing

As an indicative 2026 guide, a home DB board upgrade is often in the range of KES 15,000 to 60,000 depending on the number of circuits and protection. A single pump control panel often starts from around KES 40,000, while multi-motor panels, main switchboards and power factor correction banks range from KES 150,000 to well over KES 1,000,000. Every price depends on site; confirm with a free site survey.

Who this service is for

  • Homeowners: DB upgrades for older houses, extensions, new kitchens and tripping problems.
  • Landlords and apartments: main boards, sub-boards per unit and pump control for water systems.
  • Businesses and industry: factories, workshops, cold rooms, warehouses and water projects with motors and heavy loads.
  • Institutions: schools, hospitals and churches needing safe, well-organised power distribution.

Board work often goes hand in hand with wider wiring. See our electrical installations service for rewiring and new builds, and our generator installations for ATS panels that connect backup power to your board.

Maintenance and aftercare

Terminations loosen over time, dust builds up and contactors wear. Regular panel maintenance includes tightening connections, thermal checks for hot spots, testing RCDs and checking capacitor banks. For commercial sites we recommend scheduled maintenance to avoid unplanned shutdowns. Breakers, contactors and enclosures are also available in our online shop.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?
Common causes are an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance, damaged wiring, moisture in a socket or fitting, or an earth leakage fault. Sometimes the breaker itself is worn or wrongly rated. Constant tripping is a warning sign, so do not replace the breaker with a bigger one. Have an electrician test the circuit and the board to find the real cause.
How much does it cost to upgrade a DB board in Kenya?
As an indicative 2026 guide, upgrading a home distribution board is often in the range of KES 15,000 to 60,000, depending on the number of circuits, whether you add earth leakage and surge protection, and the condition of the existing wiring. Three-phase and commercial boards cost more. The price depends on site; confirm with a free site survey.
When should I replace my distribution board?
Consider a replacement if your board still uses rewireable fuses, has no earth leakage protection (RCD), shows burn marks or a burning smell, trips often, is full with no spare ways, or you are adding a big load such as an extension, electric cooker or borehole pump. Old or damaged boards are a common cause of electrical fires.
What is power factor correction and do I need it?
Power factor shows how efficiently your site uses the power it draws. Motors, compressors and some lighting lower it. On many commercial and industrial tariffs, a low power factor leads to extra charges on your electricity bill. Power factor correction uses capacitor banks to fix this. Homes rarely need it, but factories and businesses with many motors often do.
What is the difference between DOL and star-delta starters?
A DOL (direct on line) starter connects the motor straight to full voltage, which is simple and cheap but causes a high starting current. It suits small motors. A star-delta starter starts the motor at reduced voltage, then switches to full voltage, cutting the starting current. It suits larger motors such as big pumps and compressors where a DOL start would strain the supply.
What is an RCD and why does my board need one?
An RCD (residual current device) detects current leaking to earth, for example through a damaged cable or a person touching a live part, and switches off the power in a fraction of a second. It protects people from electric shock and reduces the risk of fire. Modern distribution boards should include RCD protection for socket and wet-area circuits.
Can you build a control panel for my borehole pump?
Yes. We build pump control panels with the right starter, overload and phase protection, and dry-run protection so the pump stops when the water level drops. Panels can include float switches or level sensors to fill tanks automatically, and timers where needed. This protects your pump and saves you from costly rewinds or replacements.
